The auction for the pi domain has ended: the next step for pioneers
The Pi Network .pi domain name auction will end on September 30, 2025, marking an important step for the platform-level utility in the ecosystem. Pioneers can expect a structured domain claim process that ensures the domain is used for legitimate purposes, including online applications and business activities, while minimizing the risk of malicious hoarding.
Auction End Time Schedule
All domain auctions will officially end on September 30. After this date:
No new bids will be accepted.
However, if a bid is received for the domain in the last 24 hours of the auction, the bidding window for that domain will be automatically extended by 24 hours.
If another bid appears within the extended time, the time will be extended for another 24 hours, and so on.
This rolling extension mechanism is consistent with the original auction rules and aims to ensure that all actively participating pioneer users can have a fair bidding opportunity. At the end of the auction for a specific domain name, the winning pioneer user will receive the bid for the domain name they bid on.
The process of applying for a domain name
After the auction ends, it will enter a data review phase of about two months. This step is crucial for confirming the auction results and preparing the domain application process.
After the review period ends, eligible winners can start claiming their domain names. To ensure that .pi domain names are used for the positive development of the ecosystem and to prevent low-price hoarding that could hinder legitimate projects from obtaining their domain names in the future, the claiming process (at least in the initial phase) is as follows:
The domain name winner must meet the following conditions to successfully claim the domain name:
Connect to the Pi application for the domain.
The connected Pi applications need to set a natural usage threshold. After the review period, we will provide more details on how to reach this threshold.
For example, for merchant use cases, this process includes linking their store website URL, connecting the wallet used for transactions, and briefly describing how the domain supports the utility.
From the start of the application process, pioneer members will have up to one year to fulfill the above requirements to claim their domain name. This provides ample time for genuine builders and business winners to complete all requirements and claim their domain name.
Please note that the qualification criteria for applying for a domain name may be relaxed or changed in the future.
This approach ensures that the domain is connected to real applications, merchants, and use cases within the ecosystem and remains available.
Renewal and security measures
After the domain name application function is released for one year, the domain name will need to be renewed, similar to traditional domain registration outside of Pi. To prevent domain name squatting, renewals will also be based on the aforementioned similar standards. For example, applications need to demonstrate actual utility and usage, and merchants may need to meet minimum wallet transaction frequency requirements.
Prioritize practical use cases
The claims process will initially prioritize the following three categories:
1. Applications from developers
2. Applications built through Pi App Studio have gained some attention.
3. Merchants need online business
These groups provide the most direct path to achieving instant utility. Their broader goal is clear: to prevent low-cost, large-scale domain hoarding, thereby promoting the flourishing of meaningful use cases and applications.
Domains are an important collective resource of the Pi ecosystem, and their proper use is crucial for strengthening the Pi ecosystem, providing pioneers with tools for building, connecting, and trading with greater trust and functionality.
