Gate News reports that on March 18, the API aggregation platform for AI models, OpenRouter, surpassed an annualized token throughput of 1 quadrillion (10^15), with a weekly throughput of 20.47 trillion tokens. OpenRouter investor and Menlo Ventures partner Deedy Das announced this data, estimating that at an average price of about $1 per million tokens, the token consumption routed through OpenRouter corresponds to an annual expenditure of approximately $1 billion.
OpenRouter usage chart shows that its weekly token throughput grew from about 2 trillion in March 2025 to over 20 trillion in March 2026, a tenfold increase within a year. As of the week ending March 16, the most used models were: the mysterious Hunter Alpha (5 billion tokens/week), MiniMax M2.5 (448 billion), Step 3.5 Flash (337 billion), Claude Sonnet 4.6 (308 billion), DeepSeek V3.2 (301 billion), Claude Opus 4.6 (275 billion), and Gemini 3 Flash Preview (272 billion).
OpenRouter was founded by Alex Atallah, co-founder of OpenSea, and completed a $40 million funding round in June 2025 (including seed and Series A rounds), with Menlo Ventures leading the Series A and Sequoia Capital participating.
