On April 7, citing a diplomatic memo, the British newspaper The Times reported that Iran’s current Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has lost the ability to carry out his duties and is currently receiving medical treatment in the holy city of Qom (Qom). The report says Mojtaba’s injuries are severe, he is in a coma, and he is undergoing treatment due to his critical health condition, unable to participate in any decisions of the regime. The memo first disclosed the location of this Supreme Leader. Qom is located 87 miles south of Tehran and is regarded as a sacred site in Shia Islam. Although U.S. and Israeli intelligence agencies previously claimed they had tracked his whereabouts, with the deadline set by Trump drawing near, the power vacuum within Iran’s leadership has added significant uncertainty to the volatile situation in the Persian Gulf.
