Gate News reports that on March 20, Blue Origin submitted an application to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission for “Project Sunrise,” aiming to deploy up to 51,600 satellites in sun-synchronous orbit to build a large-scale space data center network. The system plans to achieve high-speed communication through inter-satellite optical links and utilize return networks like TeraWave for data transmission, focusing on artificial intelligence computing and data center load demands.
From a technical perspective, the project intends to extend computing infrastructure into orbit, improving data processing and transmission efficiency while reducing bottlenecks caused by ground energy and space limitations. Industry experts believe that space-based data centers could become a new direction in AI computing power competition, but large-scale deployment still faces multiple challenges such as costs, regulation, and orbital resource management.
