Gate News message, April 13, Hong Kong police’s “Guard Net” social platform disclosed a cryptocurrency investment fraud case. A woman in her fifties was lured by a botched “lover” who approached her on Instagram. After the suspect quickly built a romantic relationship by pretending to care about her well-being, he claimed to be a “cryptocurrency investment expert,” and lured the victim into sending 40k yuan on the pretext of opening an investment account as a “fee.” The scammer then instructed the victim to carry cash to a physical exchange store to exchange USDT in 7 installments, and to transfer it to a designated account via an electronic wallet. After the funds arrived, the scammer immediately disappeared, and the victim’s total loss exceeded 2 million yuan. Police reminded people that when meeting online, you should be more vigilant; if the other party asks for a transfer for any reason, you should stop immediately and think calmly.
