According to Fortune, Wintermute founder Evgeny Gaevoy stated on the Crypto Playbook podcast that the cryptocurrency industry has moved away from its cypherpunk roots. He believes the “price only goes up” mentality is overshadowing the original goal of building decentralized, censorship-resistant systems. Gaevoy criticized the increasing reliance on stablecoins, arguing that they reinforce the dominance of the US dollar rather than creating a truly decentralized parallel financial system.
He also warned about the trend of crypto becoming more integrated with Wall Street, calling on the community to return to cypherpunk values instead of fully assimilating with traditional finance. Although Ethereum holds over $120 billion in total value locked, Gaevoy considers the practical application of decentralized apps to still be limited. He believes the future of crypto depends on restoring its original spirit, not just on scaling capital.
