August 1, 2025 — Trademark registration
xAI submitted a “Macrohard” trademark application to the United States Patent and Trademark Office, costing $2,300, covering two categories—AI voice/text software, and agentic artificial intelligence.
August 22, 2025 — Official announcement
Elon Musk posted on X to officially announce that they would build a “pure AI software company” under xAI, and publicly recruit engineers. Core logic: companies like Microsoft themselves don’t produce hardware, and in theory can fully simulate their operations with AI.
October 2025 — Memphis supercomputing center unveiled
Elon Musk painted the giant “MACROHARD” characters on the roof of the xAI Memphis Colossus 2 supercomputing center, so large it can be seen from space.
February 11, 2026 — xAI all-hands meeting publicly disclosed
xAI will split the company into four teams, one of which is dedicated to the Macrohard project. The leader, Toby Pohlen, said: “It can do anything a computer can do—rocket engines should be completely designed by AI.”
March 11, 2026 — Tesla×xAI joint project officially launched
Elon Musk confirmed that Macrohard (also known as “Digital Optimus”) is a joint project between Tesla and xAI, and is part of Tesla’s $2 billion investment agreement with xAI. Architecturally, Grok handles high-level reasoning (System 2), while Tesla AI handles real-time screen processing (System 1), running on Tesla AI4 chips.
This announcement is legally sensitive—because in September 2024, Musk had just told Tesla shareholders, “Nothing needs to be authorized from xAI.” And currently, Tesla shareholders are suing him over conflicts of interest with xAI.
April 2026 (latest) — During training of an ultra-large model
Colossus 2 is currently training 7 models at the same time, with the largest reaching 100 trillion parameters (10T). It is the largest publicly announced scale in the industry so far, exceeding the estimated sizes of GPT-5 and Claude.
