Gate at 13: Founder Reflects on Risk, Conviction, and Building Through Uncertainty
As digital asset platform Gate marks its 13th anniversary, its founder has shared a reflective letter tracing the company’s journey from a one-person idea to a global organization serving tens of millions of users.
From Academia to an Uncertain Frontier
Thirteen years ago, the founder made a pivotal decision; one that meant stepping away from a stable academic path in optoelectronics and into the largely uncharted world of blockchain.
At the time, Bitcoin and its underlying technology were far from mainstream. Pursuing a career in semiconductor research would have offered security and recognition. Instead, the founder chose to follow what he describes as “the next structural shift”; a future defined by decentralization and digital assets.
That decision, though uncertain at the time, ultimately laid the foundation for what Gate has become today.
Building from Scratch
The early days of Gate were marked by minimal resources and no formal structure. The company began as a solo effort, without a defined roadmap or team.
Gradually, that changed.
What started with one individual evolved into a small group, and later into a global workforce of nearly 3,000 people. The founder recalls one of the earliest team meetings; a small, informal gathering on a cold winter day, where ideas were discussed without certainty but with strong belief.
“That moment,” he reflects, “already carried the essence of what Gate would become.”
A Philosophy Rooted in Curiosity
Beyond the business journey, the founder attributes much of the company’s direction to a personal mindset shaped early in life.
From teaching himself programming as a teenager to dismantling and rebuilding computers, his approach has consistently centered on understanding systems at a fundamental level rather than simply following predefined paths.
This curiosity-driven philosophy later translated into how Gate was built; focusing less on immediate outcomes and more on long-term structural value.
Looking Ahead
Now, with millions of users and over a decade of growth behind it, Gate’s story reflects a broader narrative within the blockchain industry; one defined by early skepticism, bold decisions, and gradual mainstream adoption.
As the platform enters its next phase, the founder’s reflections suggest that the same principles that guided its beginnings; conviction, patience, and a willingness to step outside comfort zones; will continue to shape its future.
