Just realized a lot of people don't know how to properly update their SASSA banking details, especially with the December payments coming up. Honestly it's kind of a pain depending on which grant you're on.
So if you're getting a permanent grant like old age or disability, you literally have to go to a SASSA office in person—can't do it online no matter what. They'll give you a form to fill out, and you need to bring your ID and proof of your new bank account (like a recent bank statement, max 3 months old). The whole verification thing can take up to 21 working days, so if you need it sorted for next month's payment, submit before the 15th or you'll miss the window.
But here's the thing—if you're on the SRD R370 grant, it's way easier. You can update your banking details online through their portal, no office visit needed. Just enter your ID number, they send you an SMS link, and you update your account info through there. Takes a few days to weeks for the bank to verify though.
For your cellphone number, same deal—permanent grants need you to visit an office or call 0800 60 10 11, but SRD grants let you change it online through their contact portal. They'll send you an OTP to confirm it's actually you.
One thing though: make sure whatever account you're updating is in YOUR name only. SASSA won't pay into joint accounts or anything like that. And watch out for fake websites claiming to update your grants—use the official SASSA portal only or you might get scammed. Anyone else dealing with this headache right now?
