I just found out about something that remains one of the biggest mysteries in crypto: Ruja Ignatova, the mind behind the OneCoin Ponzi scheme, is probably still alive and in hiding. According to recent investigations by German authorities, the Bulgarian educated at Oxford might be residing in an exclusive neighborhood near Cape Town, South Africa.
For those unfamiliar with the case, Ruja Ignatova disappeared in October 2017 after defrauding millions of investors with OneCoin, a completely fake cryptocurrency without a real blockchain. She literally took $4.3 billion out of the system. For years, people speculated whether she was dead, murdered, or simply missing.
But here’s the interesting part: German detectives from the LKA office have been analyzing the case, and according to a recent WDR documentary, all evidence points to Cape Town. Sabine Dässel, a criminal investigation representative in North Rhine-Westphalia, confirmed that they are operating under the assumption that Ruja Ignatova is alive. Ruja’s brother, Konstantin, was seen visiting Cape Town several times after her disappearance, suggesting he might be in contact with her.
What’s fascinating is that Konstantin, who took over OneCoin’s operations after she fled, later cooperated with the FBI and served time in prison. He revealed that Ruja escaped with £500 million, enough to fund a luxurious life with false identities. There are even theories that she underwent plastic surgery to change her appearance.
The FBI isn’t playing around: they currently have Ruja Ignatova on their list of the ten most wanted fugitives, and they increased the reward from $100,000 to $5 million. Several of her accomplices have already been convicted: Karl Greenwood is serving 20 years, Irina Dilkinska was convicted of fraud and money laundering, Mark Scott received 10 years.
What strikes me most is that Ruja Ignatova’s case remains relevant because it exactly exposes why the crypto community needs to be skeptical. OneCoin was a classic scam using promises of cryptocurrency, and millions fell for it. Today, with so many legitimate projects in the space, this case is a reminder of the importance of verifying real fundamentals.
