Few people think about where the idea of Dogecoin originally came from. Behind it is a real person—Billy Markus, an American programmer who, at the end of 2013, along with Jackson Palmer, created what was initially just a joke about serious crypto projects like Bitcoin and Litecoin.
Interestingly, before Dogecoin, Billy Markus worked as a software engineer at IBM. But unlike many crypto creators, he did not become a media figure. For a long time, little was known about his personal life and career—Markus preferred to stay in the shadows, although he occasionally appeared online under the pseudonym Shibetoshi Nakamoto.
He was born in 1983 in Portland, Oregon. Currently, Billy Markus is active on Twitter/X, where he has accumulated about 2.1 million followers. Considering that Dogecoin was launched as a meme currency in jest, few expected the project to soar so high. But that’s exactly what happened—what started as a joke became one of the most recognizable cryptocurrencies in history. Markus’s story is a classic example of how a random project can change the entire crypto landscape.
