To address the energy crisis caused by artificial intelligence, startup Aikido plans to build a 100-kilowatt demonstration data center off the coast of Norway this year. The data center will be located inside the hull of a floating offshore wind turbine. If the testing is successful, by 2028, Aikido aims to construct a 10-12 MW data center powered by 15-18 MW turbines near the UK coast. The plan leverages stable offshore wind energy, proximity to power supply points, natural seawater cooling, and avoids land use resistance. However, challenges include the harsh and highly corrosive marine environment, which requires advanced engineering technology. Microsoft previously pioneered a similar submerged data center project but abandoned it after successful testing in 2018, while Aikido is restarting its offshore data center initiative.
