Hong Kong introduces a new fairy policy again!

It's about permanent residency for expatriates! Effective tomorrow!
Starting March 1st (tomorrow), this policy aims to solve the headache of visa discontinuation for expatriates in Hong Kong. In the future, a wave of cross-border convenience arrangements will also be implemented.
Extended renewal application period for multiple talent programs
From March 1, 2026, individuals approved to work and reside in Hong Kong through the following talent programs, along with their spouses, children, and other dependents, can submit an application to extend their stay within 3 months before their current stay expires.
Previously, renewal applications for expatriates could only be submitted about 4 weeks before the stay expired, making the timing very tight.
If there are issues with the documents, approval encounters holidays, or if applications peak, there is a risk of visa discontinuation at any moment!
It’s important to know that the requirement for permanent residency in Hong Kong is "continuous ordinary residence for at least 7 years." If the renewal is interrupted, the continuous years are reset to zero, and all the years previously accumulated are wasted—no place to cry!
Now, with a full 3-month buffer period, documents can be prepared slowly, and there is ample time to correct issues. No more last-minute rushes risking visa discontinuation; the risk is minimized.
