With the blockbuster release of “Pegasus” during the Spring Festival season, according to the latest data from Maoyan Pro, Shen Teng’s movies have surpassed 40 billion yuan in total box office revenue, making him the highest-grossing star in Chinese film history. Wu Jing and Liu Haoran have accumulated box office revenues of over 35.6 billion yuan and 25.7 billion yuan, respectively, ranking second and third.
In other words, the box office gap between Wu Jing and Shen Teng is equivalent to a film like “Man Jiang Hong”; the difference between Liu Haoran and Shen Teng is nearly as much as a film like “Nezha Conquers the Demon Cloud.”
Currently, Shen Teng has six lead films with box office revenues exceeding 3 billion yuan, forming the foundation of his box office success. These six films are “Hello, Li Huanying,” “Man Jiang Hong,” “Pegasus 2,” “Claw Crane,” “Pegasus 3,” and “Moon Man.” Among them, “Pegasus 3,” as the highest-grossing film of this year’s Spring Festival and still showing in theaters, is expected to continue boosting Shen Teng’s box office record. Maoyan predicts its final box office will exceed 4.3 billion yuan.
Among Wu Jing’s films, six have also surpassed 3 billion yuan in box office revenue, including “The Battle at Lake Changjin,” “Wolf Warrior 2,” “The Wandering Earth,” “The Battle at Lake Changjin II,” “The Wandering Earth 2,” and “My People, My Homeland.” During this year’s Spring Festival, Wu Jing’s “Biao Ren” has already surpassed 900 million yuan, ranking third in box office for the same period, but it is still quite behind Shen Teng’s “Pegasus 3.” Maoyan predicts its final box office may exceed 1.3 billion yuan.
Liu Haoran has five lead films with box office revenues over 3 billion yuan, including “Detective Chinatown 3,” “Detective Chinatown 1900,” “Detective Chinatown 2,” “My People, My Homeland,” and “Nanjing Photo Studio.” He has no new releases during this year’s Spring Festival.
For a long time, audiences have associated Shen Teng with comedy films and Wu Jing with action films. Both Shen Teng and Wu Jing are starring in “The Wandering Earth 3,” scheduled for release during the 2027 Spring Festival, so the box office rivalry between them may depend on other upcoming films.
According to publicly available information, Shen Teng’s other upcoming starring films include Zhang Yimou’s “Man Jiang Hong 2” and Wen Muye’s “Welcome to Long Restaurant.” Wu Jing’s upcoming films include Luo Lixian’s “Drive the Long Car” and Yu Baimei’s “Iron Cavalry.” With their existing film IPs, they are likely to continue competing at the box office in the near future.
