Hardware testing only: Microsoft releases lightweight Win11 image 2601, adds offline management WinRE
IT Home February 12 News, Microsoft updated the Windows 11 Validation OS image yesterday (February 11), bringing it to version 2601. The update mainly adds WinRE offline management features, introduces RAS remote access, enhances x64 architecture printing, and supports SENS system event notifications.
IT Home notes: Validation OS is a lightweight operating system based on Windows 11, primarily designed for hardware manufacturers on production lines to quickly test, verify, and repair PC hardware defects. It boots directly into a command-line interface (CLI) but has the capability to run Win32 applications.
The new version image is 26100.7705.260126-1049. Major improvements include enabling offline management of Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) via the optional component Microsoft-WinVOS-RETools.
IT Home quotes a blog post introducing the update, with the following details:
Support for remote access services (RAS) has been added through the new Microsoft-WinVOS-RAS optional package.
[For x64 only] Printing support has been enhanced with the new Microsoft-WinVOS-Printing optional package.
Support for the System Event Notification Service (SENS) has been added via the existing Microsoft-WinVOS-COM optional package.
The base Validation OS image includes the Secur32 interface for security support providers.
Microsoft points out a known issue: on some arm64 systems, attempting to enable Serial Console (SAC) support may cause system instability and prevent startup. The only workaround is to enable this feature during initial image customization.
Additionally, as Windows 11 gradually phases out the Windows Management Instrumentation Command-line (WMIC), the validation OS will also remove this tool, so users should prepare accordingly.
