London Police in the UK announced on the afternoon of February 23 local time that former UK Ambassador to the United States, Peter Mandelson, has been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office. It is reported that Mandelson has been taken to a police station in London for questioning.
Earlier this month, the London Police announced that an investigation had been launched into Mandelson for alleged misconduct during his public service.
Mandelson, 72 years old, previously held key positions such as Business Secretary during the administrations of former UK Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. In February 2025, current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak appointed him as the UK Ambassador to the US, but Mandelson was dismissed after only seven months in the role amid revelations of his connections to Jeffrey Epstein.
Previously, Mandelson referred to Epstein as his “best friend” in a birthday letter. A batch of documents disclosed last month showed that between 2003 and 2004, Mandelson and his partner allegedly received three transfers totaling $75,000 from Epstein; during his tenure as Business Secretary in 2009, he also forwarded an economic briefing to Epstein that was addressed to then-Prime Minister Brown, which included internal discussions about the UK government’s asset sales and fundraising efforts following the 2008 global financial crisis; in May 2010, he also reportedly disclosed to Epstein in advance about the EU’s upcoming €500 billion bailout plan for the Eurozone.
