The big market rotation may lead to gains in this health care name. Trading it with options

While the stock market rarely offers absolute certainties, historical seasonality is a rhythm that plays out more often than not. If you look at the S & P 500’s performance over the last decade, February consistently ushers in a period of weakness — which perfectly explains the choppy price action we are navigating right now. However, capital doesn’t just evaporate during these pullbacks; it rotates. We are currently seeing a textbook sector rotation play out in real time. Institutional money is actively flowing out of high-beta tech and consumer discretionary names, seeking shelter in the more defensive, stable corners of the market like consumer staples, utilities and health care. A quick glance at the current sector rotation models shows health care — represented by the State Street Health Care Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLV) — pushing firmly into the leading quadrant. This tells us that even in a turbulent broader market, highly selective bullish setups are out there if you know where to look. One specific health care name that has grabbed my attention right now is Illumina Inc. (ILMN) . To confirm this setup, I am leaning on three specific technical signals: Directional movement index (DMI) The initial clue that the sellers were exhausting themselves appeared back on Feb. 6. That is when we saw a distinct pivot in the directional lines, with the DI+ (green) and DI- (red) starting to curl and shift direction. When these lines begin to converge after a steep drop, it strongly suggests the prevailing bearish momentum has run its course and the stock is preparing to base. Relative strength index (RSI) The momentum picture is now confirming that early DMI shift. After a stint in deep oversold territory, the RSI officially broke back above the critical threshold on February 17th. Since that breakout, the indicator has been steadily climbing, proving that buyers are stepping in with renewed conviction. Custom MACD (5, 13, 5) To lock in the exact entry timing, I rely on my calibrated (5, 13, 5) MACD settings, which cut through the lag of traditional inputs. This indicator gave us a definitive buy signal — the MACD line crossing decisively above the signal line — on Feb. 17. This perfectly aligns with the RSI breakout, giving us a high-confidence green light for the trade. The trade setup: ILMN 120-125 bull call spread To capitalize on this setup, I am looking at a bull call spread. This approach is ideal right now because it provides substantial upside leverage while keeping our downside risk strictly capped. We can target an entry via a limit order around $2.50 per contract (or $250 per spread). This cost basis gives us excellent flexibility to scale the position. For example, taking on a 10-lot means putting $2,500 at risk for a shot at a $2,500 profit. To capture that full 100% return, all we need is for ILMN to close at or above the $125 mark by expiration. I always keep my strike selection flexible. I prefer to sandwich the current price action to optimize the probability of a winning trade. If ILMN shows near-term weakness and dips below $120, I will simply adjust my sights downward and target the 115/120 call spread instead, keeping the trade perfectly aligned with the market’s immediate reality. Here is my exact trade setup: Buy $120 call, March 20 expiry Sell $125 call, March 20 expiry Contracts: 1 Cost: $250 Potential profit: $250 — Nishant Pant Founder: Author: Mean Reversion Trading YouTube, Twitter: @TheMeanTrader DISCLOSURES: Nishant has a ILMN bull call spread expiring on 3/20/26.
