According to South Korea’s Chosun Ilbo on the 20th, former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol stated that he found the court’s logic—finding him guilty of insurrection for “sending troops to the National Assembly”—“hard to accept.”

Reports say that Yoon Suk-yeol’s legal team met with him in detention on the 20th and issued a statement on his behalf, describing the declaration of a state of emergency as a “rescue decision” made for the country and its people. At the same time, Yoon Suk-yeol expressed deep regret for the pain caused to the public due to his “own shortcomings.”

On the 19th, Yoon Suk-yeol was sentenced to life imprisonment in the first trial by the Seoul Central District Court for insurrection. The court pointed out that declaring a state of emergency does not directly constitute insurrection, but if its purpose is to paralyze the functions of constitutional authorities, it can be considered insurrection. The court emphasized that the core issue in this case is Yoon Suk-yeol’s dispatching of troops to the National Assembly.

Yoon Suk-yeol is involved in eight criminal cases. Besides the trial on the 19th, he was sentenced to five years in prison on January 16th for obstructing the execution of special duties, abuse of authority hindering others from exercising their rights, and instructing the falsification of false emergency declaration documents. Additionally, six other cases are under review or about to be tried. (Xinhua News Agency)
