After the Mexican armed forces killed a major drug cartel leader on February 22, riots broke out in several regions of Mexico. In response to the domestic security situation, the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs issued a notice on the 22nd, stating that due to ongoing security operations, road closures, and criminal activities, American citizens in states such as Jalisco and Yucatán should “shelter in place until further notice.” The Canadian government also issued a travel warning for Mexico on the same day, advising Canadian citizens to stay low profile, stay informed about the situation, and follow local authorities’ instructions. Additionally, the Canadian Foreign Ministry announced that it has classified the overall risk level in Mexico as “high alert” and designated more than ten states as areas to “avoid non-essential travel.” Countries such as the UK, France, and Russia have also issued related safety warnings regarding Mexico.
