The spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce commented on the U.S. announcement of reciprocal tariffs.
China has noted that on April 2nd, Eastern Time, the U.S. announced the imposition of "reciprocal tariffs" on all trading partners. China firmly opposes this and will resolutely take countermeasures to safeguard its own rights and interests.
The US claims that it has been at a disadvantage in international trade and has raised tariffs on all trade partners under the pretext of "reciprocity." This practice disregards the balanced benefits achieved through years of multilateral trade negotiations and ignores the fact that the US has profited significantly from international trade for a long time. The US's conclusion of so-called "reciprocal tariffs" based on subjective and unilateral assessments does not comply with international trade rules, severely undermines the legitimate rights and interests of the parties involved, and is a typical example of unilateral bullying. In this regard, many trade partners have already expressed strong dissatisfaction and clear opposition.
History has shown that increasing tariffs does not solve the problems of the United States, as it harms both its own interests and jeopardizes global economic development and the stability of production and supply chains. There are no winners in a trade war, and protectionism has no way out. China urges the U.S. to immediately cancel unilateral tariff measures and to resolve differences with trade partners through equal dialogue.
