Gate News, March 17 — OpenAI has made significant adjustments to its Stargate computing infrastructure project, abandoning the construction of its own data centers and instead utilizing third-party cloud services such as AWS and Google Cloud for computing power. The company’s projected total computing expenditure by 2030 has been reduced from previously $1.4 trillion to approximately $600 billion. This adjustment is mainly due to funding pressures. Since its proposal in 2025, the Stargate project has progressed slowly and has not secured large-scale construction financing. OpenAI has withdrawn from related expansion negotiations in Texas and has reached a new partnership with SoftBank, where SoftBank will handle energy and facility development, while OpenAI will acquire computing resources through long-term leases. Additionally, OpenAI is shifting its computing deployment to NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin platform, aiming to achieve its first gigawatt-scale computing capacity by the second half of 2026.
