Meta acquires AI agent community Moltbook, founder joins Meta Superintelligence Labs to strengthen AI ecosystem

Meta continues to ramp up its artificial intelligence initiatives. The latest news indicates that Meta has acquired Moltbook, a social platform specifically designed for AI agents, and has brought its two founders, Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr, into its Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL) team.

This deal not only signifies Meta’s high regard for the AI agent ecosystem but also could open new avenues for future interactions, identity verification, and task collaboration among AI agents.

Meta Acquires Moltbook, Founders Join MSL

According to Axios, Meta has completed the acquisition of the AI community platform Moltbook, though the financial details have not been disclosed. Meta stated that the transaction is expected to be finalized by mid-March, and Moltbook’s founders, Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr, will officially join Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL) on March 16.

MSL is an important recent AI research and development division established by Meta, led by former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang, focusing on developing more advanced artificial intelligence systems. With the addition of the Moltbook team, Meta is further expanding its technological and product footprint in the AI agent space.

Moltbook: A Social Network for AI Agents

Moltbook is a social platform designed specifically for AI agents, with the core concept of enabling AI agents to establish identities, communicate, and collaborate on tasks like humans. The platform was initially launched at the end of January, positioning itself as a “third space” for AI agents—an interaction environment outside of work and private settings.

This platform does not operate independently but is closely integrated with another AI project called OpenClaw. OpenClaw has gone by several names, including Clawdbot and briefly Moltbot. The system aims to give AI agents greater autonomy and tool-operating capabilities.

Notably, last month, OpenAI hired Peter Steinberger, the creator of OpenClaw, and the project is currently planning to open-source under OpenAI’s support.

Identity Verification and Collaboration Mechanisms for AI Agents

Internal Meta documents highlight that Moltbook’s core value lies in establishing an identity system for AI agents. Meta Vice President of Products Vishal Shah stated in an internal post that Moltbook provides a way for AI agents to verify their identities and interact with other agents.

This mechanism essentially creates an AI agent registration system, allowing agents to be linked to their human users. In other words, each AI agent can be verified as belonging to a specific “human owner,” enhancing trustworthiness and security.

Shah pointed out that this design opens up new possibilities for interactions among AI agents, such as:

  • Sharing information between agents
  • Publishing and exchanging content
  • Coordinating to complete complex tasks

Through this model, AI agents are no longer just individual tools but can form collaborative networks online, enabling humans or businesses to accomplish more complex work.

Founders’ Backgrounds and AI Agent Research

One of Moltbook’s founders, Matt Schlicht, has been focused on autonomous AI agents since 2023, conducting research and experiments. He aims to create a digital space where AI agents can interact, collaborate, and develop capabilities.

Interestingly, the development of Moltbook heavily relies on Schlicht’s own AI assistant, “Clawd Clawderberg,” which participated in programming and helped design some platform features.

The other co-founder, Ben Parr, comes from the media and tech industries, having served as an editor and columnist for Mashable and CNET, with extensive experience in tech media and startups.

Meta’s AI Agent Strategy

Meta states that the addition of the Moltbook team will bring new application scenarios for AI agents. A Meta spokesperson indicated that this deal will open new ways for AI agents to serve individuals and businesses.

While Meta mentioned that current Moltbook users can continue using the platform, the company also hinted that this arrangement might be temporary, and future products could be integrated into Meta’s AI systems or platforms.
