The number of deaths related to artificial intelligence chatbots using large language models (LLMs) has increased to 23 worldwide from March 2023 to February 2026, according to LLMDeathCount. Most cases are identified as suicides, with victims aged from 13 to 83. ChatGPT is linked to the highest number of cases with 16, followed by Character.ai with two cases, and others involving platforms like Gemini and Chai Research.
The latest case involves Jonathan Gavalas, 36, from Florida, who is believed to have formed a relationship with an “AI wife” named Xia through Google’s Gemini chatbot. After months of chatting, the chatbot allegedly suggested that the only way for them to be together was for him to become a “digital entity.” Gavalas was later found dead at his home. The victim’s father has sued Alphabet, marking the first lawsuit related to Gemini.
