Guterres is deeply concerned about threats against Iran and opposes harming civilians for military purposes.
On April 7, local time, UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said that Guterres was deeply concerned about recent remarks related to Iran. The remarks suggest that ordinary people—and even an entire civilization—will pay the price for political and military decisions. Guterres emphasized that any military purpose cannot be a legitimate reason to destroy a country’s social infrastructure or to deliberately subject civilians to suffering. Dujarric said the Secretary-General reaffirmed that the end of the conflict depends on leaders choosing dialogue instead of destruction; that choice still exists, and it must be made now. He called for increased diplomatic efforts to find a path to peace. The UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy, Jean Arnaud, is on his way to the region to support related efforts. At the same time, Guterres called for the restoration of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. As he said recently, when the Strait of Hormuz is “choked off,” the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people will struggle to survive. (CCTV News)
