Foreign media: Over 1,800 mathematicians jointly sign a petition, and the International Congress of Mathematicians faces resistance for being held in the U.S.

The International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) will be held in Philadelphia, United States, this July. The event, which will return to the United States for the first time in 40 years, has now sparked intense controversy amid the global math community’s resistance action. Based on reports from outlets including Scientific American and South Korea’s Kyunghyang News, at least 1,800 mathematicians worldwide have already jointly signed a petition calling for changes to the venue of the ICM. A petition urging that “this event be moved to another place” is being circulated among mathematicians. The petition argues that the United States’ recent military actions against Iran and Venezuela, as well as its moves concerning Greenland, have “undermined global stability,” running counter to the ICM’s goal of promoting “international solidarity and awareness among mathematicians.” The petition states that the U.S. government’s suspension of visas to 75 countries, along with related enforcement actions by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, have led mathematicians worldwide to worry about their own safety, believing that “attending the conference in the U.S. involves significant safety risks.” (Sina Finance)
