The U.S. strongly pushes for the Security Council to hold a sanctions meeting on Iran; China and Russia vote against it.
At 12:00 local time, the United States, as the rotating chair of the Security Council for March, convened a Security Council meeting under the “Non-Proliferation” agenda item and strongly pushed for work by the Security Council’s Resolution 1737 sanctions committee related to the Iran issue. China and Russia clearly opposed this. China stated that the “rapid restoration of sanctions” mechanism has procedural and legal flaws, and urged the United States and Israel to immediately stop military action, not to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities that are subject to the International Atomic Energy Agency’s safeguards and monitoring, so as to prevent the situation from escalating further and spilling over into war.
