The Chinese-style social interactions from the previous generation are hard for me to understand. The cause was on my dad's birthday, when the neighbor from my hometown village happened to be celebrating their son's wedding. My mom said she needed to go and give a gift. I told her, either don't go and give double the amount, I’ll pay, or go early so we can have lunch together. Neighbors' children’s weddings and family birthdays that I haven't been in contact with for decades—do these things really need to be so complicated? People live for their own happiness. As for neighbors and relatives, let’s just put that aside from now on.
