ZetaChain's GatewayEVM Contract Exploited in Cross-Chain Attack, Second Major Incident This Month

ZETA-4.44%
ETH-3.98%

Gate News message, April 28 — ZetaChain, a Layer 1 blockchain network, disclosed on April 27 that its GatewayEVM contract was targeted in a cross-chain attack. The GatewayEVM is a cross-chain smart contract that serves as the gateway for ZetaChain to exchange assets and messages with external blockchains.

The attack impacted only internal ZetaChain team wallets, and no user funds were compromised. The team has already blocked the attack vector to prevent further fund loss and suspended cross-chain transactions as a precautionary measure. A detailed post-mortem analysis will be released once the investigation is complete.

This marks the second major cross-chain vulnerability exploit in April, following the KelpDAO hack on April 18. KelpDAO, a liquid restaking protocol, suffered a cross-chain bridge attack that triggered an sETH (liquid restaked Ethereum) liquidity crisis.
