Wikimedia Begins Indonesia PSE Registration to Maintain Access

CryptoFrontier

Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital announced on April 28 that the Wikimedia Foundation has begun registering as an electronic system operator (PSE), according to Bisnis Indonesia. The registration process follows talks that began on April 23 to ensure Wikipedia remains accessible in the country.

Registration Process and Government Contact

Minister Meutya Hafid confirmed that the registration process began with the submission of administrative documents. She noted that the process involved direct contact with Wikimedia Foundation headquarters in San Francisco, as well as in-person meetings at the ministry’s office in Jakarta.

PSE Compliance Requirements

PSE registration is required for all electronic system operators in Indonesia. Non-compliance with the registration requirement can result in access to services being blocked within the country.

Wikipedia almost disappeared in Indonesia, now registering PSE to survive, this plot was also played out in Turkey last year.

Indonesia's recent move is quite pragmatic; banning is less effective than sitting down and talking. Preserving Wikipedia is a good thing for local students.

For students, it's like a life-saving boost; writing papers without Wikipedia makes it almost impossible to make progress.

Talking about beating them is good, but once this precedent is set, will other platforms also be invited one by one to have tea and register?

Once the electronic system operator badge is worn, does Wikimedia count as a de facto acknowledgment of Indonesia's digital sovereignty?

I'm curious if registering will bring content localization pressures, such as being asked to adjust certain sensitive terms?

Registering for PSE may seem minor, but it actually reflects the ongoing reconciliation between Web2 and sovereign regulation; the real point to watch is whether content censorship will be required in the future.
