Gate News message, April 17 — Google announced on April 17 that it is integrating AI-powered search functionality into Chrome’s desktop version, enabling users to browse the web in a conversational manner. The feature will roll out first in the United States, with expansion to other countries planned for the future.
The AI search mode opens alongside web pages, allowing users to continue asking follow-up questions while viewing content. When users click a link, the webpage appears next to the AI interface, which can reference page context and broader web information to provide more specific answers. For example, when searching for coffee makers, users can input product preferences, view AI-recommended options, select a specific product, and ask detailed follow-up questions about features like cleaning and convenience while browsing retailer websites.
Google also introduced a multi-tab integration feature that consolidates open browser tabs as search context. Users can press the plus menu on Chrome’s new tab page or in AI mode to select recently opened tabs and include them in searches. This allows users to upload multiple tabs, images, and documents for comprehensive queries without manually comparing information across pages. The feature supports various use cases, from hiking route planning to academic learning, where users can bundle lecture notes, presentation slides, and research papers to request tailored explanations. The AI provides summaries, recommends additional relevant websites, and connects canvas and image generation capabilities within the same interface.
