Chinese Permanent Representative to the United Nations Sun Lei delivered a speech at the Security Council’s open emergency meeting on the Lebanon-Israel situation on March 31, calling on the international community to take urgent action, hit the brakes before the conflict spirals further out of control, and restore regional peace and stability as soon as possible.
Sun Lei said that the current situation in the Middle East is escalating with ongoing spillover effects.
The immediate priority is to actively promote peace talks, seize the opportunity for peace, and push for an end to the fighting.
Achieving a ceasefire and stopping the war is the most urgent task.
Recently, Israel announced plans to expand ground operations in Lebanon and enlarge the so-called “buffer zone,” raising concerns about the further long-term prolongation and escalation of the conflict.
Lebanon must not become another Gaza, and the international community must not allow the tragedy of Gaza to happen again.
China calls on the parties involved to immediately cease hostilities and work to de-escalate the situation.
Israel should immediately withdraw all troops from Lebanon and respect Lebanon’s sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity.
Sun Lei stated that the current situation has caused serious impacts on Lebanon’s domestic politics, economy, and humanitarian situation.
Supporting Lebanon’s stability is of utmost importance.
China welcomes the Lebanese government’s efforts to strengthen national control and supports all parties within Lebanon to actively engage in political dialogue and properly resolve differences.
The international community should increase emergency aid to Lebanon, support the Lebanese government in stabilizing the domestic situation, ensuring basic livelihoods, and alleviating humanitarian challenges.
