On April 8th, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning hosted a routine press conference.

A reporter asked whether the spokesperson could provide information about the new Security Council draft resolutions proposed by China and Russia regarding the current Middle East situation and maritime security, following the Security Council’s vote on the Bahrain-proposed resolution concerning the Strait of Hormuz on the 7th, which was rejected with China and Russia voting against it.

Mao Ning said that regarding the Security Council’s recent vote on the draft resolution concerning the Strait of Hormuz, China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations has already explained China’s position in an explanatory statement. China advocates that the sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity of Gulf countries should be fully respected, and the safety of shipping lanes and energy infrastructure should be guaranteed.

The fundamental reason for the obstruction of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz is the illegal military actions by the United States and Israel against Iran. The key to resolving the issue of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz is to achieve a ceasefire and end hostilities as soon as possible. The Security Council’s actions should focus on de-escalation, not giving unapproved military actions a veneer of legitimacy, not providing a license for the use of force, and certainly not inflaming the situation and escalating conflicts. China’s voting stance is objective and fair, and can stand the test of history.

Mao Ning said that the draft resolution on the Strait of Hormuz jointly proposed by China and Russia has been officially distributed to Security Council members. The content of this draft is objective and fair, aimed at easing tensions, calling for dialogue and negotiations, and safeguarding navigation rights and freedoms. It aligns with the expectations of the international community and is believed to garner support from all parties.

China is willing to continue working with relevant parties to make unremitting efforts to promote the rapid de-escalation of the situation and restore peace and stability in the Strait and the Middle East region.
