On February 25th, according to Bloomberg, Zimbabwe announced a suspension of lithium concentrate and ore exports to promote local processing capacity for mining companies. Mining Minister Polite Kamambura stated in Harare that the ban took effect immediately and will remain in place until further notice.

Official data shows that Zimbabwe has one of the largest lithium reserves in Africa, estimated at 126 million tons, ranking it among the world’s major producers. Kamambura said the ban would be lifted only if miners fully comply with government requirements. The country had previously announced plans to ban lithium concentrate exports by 2027 to encourage foreign investment to establish refining capacity locally.

Following the announcement, U.S. lithium mining stocks rose before the market opened, with Sigma Lithium up over 8% and Albemarle up over 4%.
