I just saw that Block Inc. is undergoing significant changes in its structure. For those who don’t know what Block is, it’s the payments company led by Jack Dorsey, and it basically manages Cash App and Square, two pretty large platforms in the payments ecosystem.

What’s interesting is that they are notifying hundreds of employees about possible layoffs as part of their annual reviews. According to reports, up to 10% of their workforce could be affected. They had fewer than 11,000 people at the end of November, so we’re talking about significant numbers.

But here’s the curious part: this restructuring makes sense if you look at what Block is trying to do. They want to integrate Cash App more closely with Square, their merchant services arm. Additionally, they are expanding new initiatives like Proto, their Bitcoin mining division, and an AI project called Goose. In other words, they are reallocating resources to focus on what they consider a priority.

In terms of numbers, the stock rose nearly 5% last Friday, which is a good indicator. They were expecting to release quarterly earnings on February 26, with adjusted profit projections around $403 million on revenues of approximately $6.25 billion.

What really draws attention is Bitcoin’s role in all this. Block generated about $1.97 billion in Bitcoin revenue in the third quarter, although that was a decrease compared to $2.4 billion the previous year. They held 8,780 BTC valued at over $1 billion at the end of September.

Square, Block’s payment platform, launched an interesting option: allowing merchants to accept Bitcoin directly at their point-of-sale terminals. This adds to previous tools where they could convert part of their daily sales into BTC. Currently, more than four million vendors in eight countries use Square, so the reach is quite broad.

Basically, Block is trying to position itself at the intersection of traditional payments and crypto, and these organizational changes seem to be part of that bigger strategy. It will be interesting to see how all this evolves.
