Just looked back at how Optimism airdrop worked and honestly there's some interesting stuff here. So Op Drop #2 happened with over 11.7M OP tokens going out to 300k+ addresses. The criteria were pretty straightforward - you either delegated your OP voting power or spent more than $6.10 on L2 gas since March 2022.
What got me is they actually care about governance participation. Like, they're rewarding people who delegated their tokens to community members because they believe that strengthens the whole system. That's not just throwing tokens at people randomly.
The gas spend part makes sense too - basically a rebate for power users who were actually using Optimism instead of just sitting on tokens. They figured if you're spending real money on gas, you deserve something back.
They also had these bonus multipliers if you hit certain criteria - substantial delegation, heavy gas usage, consistent participation, that kind of thing. Pretty clever way to recognize your most active community members.
The snapshot for eligibility was January 20, 2023 at 0:00 UTC, and here's the important part - tokens went directly to wallets. No claims page, no website to visit. Optimism even warned people not to trust any site claiming to distribute the airdrop because obviously those are scams.
So if you were active in the Optimism ecosystem back then, there's a chance you got some OP tokens without even realizing it. The whole thing was basically saying thanks to people who actually participated in governance and used the network. Pretty solid approach to community building, not gonna lie.
