A tragic incident occurred on Wednesday at the judicial complex in Charsadda district, where an accused brought in police custody was shot dead.

The incident took place inside the court premises when the accused, Aizaz, son of Safdar, was brought from jail to the court for a hearing. He was killed on the spot as a result of the firing.

According to police officials, the deceased had allegedly killed the brother of the attacker, Wasif, about six months ago, due to which an old enmity existed between the two parties. Police claim that the suspect involved in the shooting was arrested at the scene and is currently in police custody.

However, the occurrence of such an incident within a highly sensitive and security-controlled location like the judicial complex has caused serious concern among lawyers, citizens, and members of the media.

Questions are being raised about how a weapon was brought inside despite strict security arrangements and the presence of numerous security personnel.

President of the Charsadda Bar Association, Mujeeb-ur-Rehman Advocate, while speaking to TNN, said,“If no one is safe inside a sensitive place like the judicial complex, where dozens of police personnel are deployed, then this is an open failure of the security system.”

He further stated that the police are repeatedly instructed to ensure thorough search procedures. Lawyers, clerks, and litigants are also searched, yet the entry of a weapon into the premises is extremely alarming.

According to him, the incident proves that the prescribed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are not being effectively implemented.

The bar president warned that if an accused can carry out such an act inside a courtroom, then the lives of judges, court staff, and lawyers are also at risk.“Inside the judicial complex, we are at the mercy of the police,” he added.

He also questioned the inquiry system, saying that after every incident, an inquiry is ordered, but neither is anyone punished nor are those responsible properly identified. According to him, this is why such incidents continue to occur.

Senior journalist Syed Shah Raza Shah also termed the incident a major question mark on the performance of the district police.

He said that every individual entering the judicial complex is searched from head to toe, and in such circumstances, bringing a weapon inside indicates either serious negligence in security or the presence of an internal weakness.

He criticized the command and control of the District Police Officer (DPO) Charsadda, stating that it reflects a failure of leadership.“Similar incidents have occurred before, yet neither has the system changed nor have those responsible been held accountable,” he said.

He further added that if this is the situation in relatively smaller incidents, then what would happen in the case of a major one? According to him, this situation is extremely dangerous for public trust.

It is worth mentioning that on October 8, 2025, three people were killed and four injured in an exchange of fire between two groups outside the Charsadda Judicial Complex.

In 2021, four people, including a woman, lost their lives in two separate incidents inside the complex.

The repeated occurrence of such incidents has deepened the sense of insecurity among court staff, lawyers, and litigants.

The Charsadda Bar Association has demanded that the Inspector General of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa immediately review judicial security, take action against responsible officers, and implement practical measures to ensure the safety of the court premises.

However, according to senior journalist Shah Raza, calling the arrest of the suspect inside the court premises a“success” is not a solution, as the real question remains: why did the shooting occur in the first place, and how was the weapon brought inside?
